Remote Sensing activities in India-X
Indian Remote Sensing satellite programme.
The successful operation of IRS- 1A forms the important segment of Indian Remote Sensing activities the satellite has covered the country 26 times since its launch in March 1988. All the sub systems on board the satellite which include LISS-I and LISS-IIA IIB sub systems cameras functioning well and station providing high quality pictures. The IRS-1A data is received at NRSA earth are station of Shatnager near Hyderabad and its Data Processing faculty to generate various data products and the same are supplied to users the demand for IRS 1A data products has registered a continuous increase in the last year and more than 60% of data products supplied to users is form IRS 1 A the NRSa data centre had so far supplied over 10,000 data products of different types to Indian and foreign users was about 15 million in spite of the increased demand for data products the turn around for time for data supply has been kept within 1 week to 10 days.
The integration work on the next satellite of this series IRS IB has been initiated, The IRS 1B will be identical to IRS 1 A and is scheduled to be launched by the end of 1990 . The configuration studies for the future satellites in the series IRS are in progress .IRS IC will carry and multispectral sensors mainly in visible NIR images will also have stereo viewing and on board data recording capabilities there is also a possibility if including a short wave infrared sensor in the range in IRS will for geological moisture stress analysis the sensor in IRS will have resolution will have resolution 20 m and swath 120 km respectively.
Towards apprising the user community on the IRS Mission a National seminar on IRS 1 A mission and its applications potentials was organised at Hyderabad during 21 22 December 1988 Subsequently 24 regional workshops have been planned to be several case have been planned held to be held in all the sate capitals most of these workshops have been held and several case studies resource themes using IRS 1A presented the important recommended conclusions that emerged from the seminar are IRS data is a recommendations conclusions IRS data is in general superior to Land sat, TM data interns of interpretability of features for most of natural resources applications knees for extensive data in natural resources applications and strength of state Remote Sensing application centers.
Data reception and dissemination facility
The NRSA Earth station at Shad Nagar Hyderabad continued to receive data from land sat and 43 and 5 data from Spot and the IRS 1 A satellite a separate metssat terminal is receiving data from the NOAA 10 satellites NRSA is planning to augment its land sat data receiving facility to receive data form satellite planned for launch by ESA towards the end of receive data from satellite planned for the end of 1990.
Data products at different levels like browse standard products were generated from IRS data necessary quality checks are carried out before theory are disseminated to the users precision products have nearly generated using and the same have been supplied to the users nearly 500 active in the country are supplied with Remote Sensing data for analysis on an average 750m satellite data products were generated monthly meet the user demands central and sate govt. agencies continue to be the major users of satellite data products . A part from supplying data products NRSA also continued to carry out areas flights for various users in the country and for the Remote Sensing application mission projects being carried out the DOS various.
Infrastructure Development
In addition to the visual and digital processing facilities available at ISRO/ DOS Remote Sensing agency Hyderabad and Space Applications center Department of Space has established 5 regional Remote Sensing center these are digital processing facilities built around VAX sensing center these are digital processing software and PC 2001 colour graphic terminal.
All the five regional Remote Sensing services center with digital image analysis facilities respectively situated at Bangalore Dehradun Jodhpur Kharhgar Nagpur are now operation and are providing service to Remote Sensing users is their respective regions these RESSC are entrustment in providing training to users in digital image processing and operation of RESSC VAX systems similar to RRSSC installed at institute of remote sensing Anna University Madras and at Uttar Pradesh Remote Sensing application centre Lucknow are now operational.
In order to effectively utilise Remote Sensing technique for proper management and developing of natural resources of the states many state governments have establishments state Remote Sensing applications centers out of the 25 meters in the 16 country 21 states have set Remote Sensing application centers and of these 16 centers 21 states in operational stage these states include uttar pradesh Madhya Pradesh orissa kerala Bihar Rajasthan Gujrat Kasmir Punjab Haryna Assam Tam8il Nandu Manipur Sikkim Karnataka Many pf these state Remote Sensing centers arew in process of medium level of these state remote sensing centers in process of procuring centers have taken part in major application projects such as land use mapping crop acerage estimation drought monitoring and ground water potential mapping etc in addition they are also carrying out projects on Remote Sensing applications covering application themes of specific importance to their states.
Similarly a large number of user departments agencies repressing state central Government and academic institutions have also established reads sensing units about 65 such Remote Sensing cells have been established in various central state user organisation and about 10 Remote Sensing Cells is the academic institutions.
