Abstract
Tourism in china, especially in Guangdong province, has been vigorously growing over last ten- odd years. In order to enable tourists to understand Guangdong’s information on scenic spots, historical relics, traffic, accommodations , shopping and so on, we compile a tourist atlas of Guangdong province as a guidance for tourists. In main parts of the atlas, remote sensed images had been used so as to examine the possibility of using of remote sensing technique into tourism service.
The tourist atlas of guangdong province consisted of the maps of satellite image, famouse scenic spots, streets of cities and tourist traffic, the charts of tourist climate and the explanations in Chinese and English. The atlas has following features in compilation:
- The general landforms of Guangdong province and tourist areas are shown by satellite remote sensed images. Some scenic pictures are set at side of major tourist spots to help reader to understand the general landform of tourism areas and the scene of the tourism spots. It enhance practicability and artistry of the atlas.
- In the layout, the atlas are divided in to 8 parts and 6 tourism areas so as to enable readers to find rapidly out the parts they need.
- Expression of the tourism elements with geometrical gragh makes the atlas very clear.
- The atlas is 24 mo with Chinese and English explanations, it is handy to carry on.
- Compilation of the atlas with satellite images simplifies the process of map-making and saves a lot of time.
Over last ten-odd years, remote sensing mapping has been greatly developed in many ways along with the development of socio-economy and science, such as on agriculture, forest, water conservancy, traffic and communication, city construction, environmental protection and so on. Tourist Atlas, as one of special maps, has become an important
way to promote tourism and an indispensable tool to tourists with development of tourism movement over the world. Therefore, how to apply remote sensing technique into tourism has become an interesting project. The paper discussed its method, feature and effect by compling the satellite image atlas of Guangdong tourism.
I. The compiling principle of the tourism atlas
Tourism atlas is used for tourist. Therefore, besides having general characters of common atlas, tourism atlas must have its own characters. The first is that its content should be practical and surrounded with the theme of serving tourism. The second is to keep its appearance artistic and clear so as to impress tourists. The third is to be convenient for tourist to use and carry with. According to above, the tourism is compiled as follows :
- 8 parts are divided according to the traffic and tourism factors, that are scenic pictures, general map, pearl river delta district, Dongjiang river district, beijiang river district, Xijiang river district, yuedong district and yuexi district. In general map, terrain, land form, tourism traffic, area divided, climate and main scenic spots are displayed so as to give reader a general understanding. In the map of district divided, city situation, traffic, shopping and entertainment are indicated, and there are guiding maps for main scenic spots.
- After enhancemental and registration processing have been made, the satellite remote sensed images are used to make general map and divided area map with color scenic picture nearby famous scenic spots. On the expression of tourism elements, we did not adopt traditional expression of terrain map, but designed a new set of vivid graph for our use.
- To set up a new set of classified criterion for tourism elements. According to the feature of tourism, more than 26 categories have been classified, they are mountain, cave and cavern, seashore, spring, river, lake, natural protection area, historical remains, park, amusemen, religious and so on. Each category can be divided into 3 grades according to its fame, importance and area, and then expressed by relevant graph with large, middle or small scale.
- The atlas is designed to 24 mo, so it is convenient for reader to carry with.
II. Working-out procedure of the atlas
1. Preparation stage
To collect various tourism maps, maps, satellite images, aerial photographs and color scenic pictures:
To analyse the materials collected;
To work out general plan;
2. Compiling stage
To process satellite images and make image maps;

3. Mapping stage
To map various base-maps;
To mark and clip words and symbol;
To provide color sample maps and original maps to be published;
4. Plate-making, printing and bookbinding stages
This part of work are completed by cartographic publishing house of Guangdong province;
The technical scheme for atlas-making is shown in table
