June 1997 saw the first monthly newsletter by the name of GIS Development. After about a year, sensing a need for more from the GIS community, the newsletter became a bimonthly magazine in Oct 1998. The same year the first Map India ('98) was held in Jamia Hamdard University, and became an annual conference. Consolidating the growth of the company achieved so far, in the year 2000, the GIS Development became the Asian Monthly GIS magazine. Shortly after that, another milestone was achieved in April when the portal www.gisdevelopment.net was launched in Map India 2000, by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit.
After receiving an over whelming response from our yearly conference, Map India, in the year 2002 another conference was launched on similar lines catering specifically to the South East Asian countries called, Map Asia. Map Asia too has become an annual conference organised by GIS Development every year in one of the Asian Countries and henceforth kept travelling to different capitals of the region.
The next progression of GIS Development was towards the Middle East region. With the establishment of a regional office in Dubai in late 2004 and a publication of bimonthly magazine 'GIS Development Middle-East Edition', in January 2005 the company has geared to address geospatial technology needs and issues of the Middle East region. Map Middle East – the annual Middle East conference was launched in April 2005 to address the requirements of scientific discourse. In the same year, the Middle East Regional Portal was launched as the only web based platform in the region that holds information in the geospatial domain.
By 2005, GIS Development was ready to spread it's purview to the specialised field of Positioning Technologies with the launch of an annual conference, then known as Graticule. This was followed by release of a bimonthly publication, known as Location. Today, under the Location umbrella, GIS Development brings:
- An Annual International Conference on Vehicle Tracking, Locational Intelligence and Surveying held in India, known as Location India
- Another region specific conference on Positioning, Navigation and Timing held in the Asian region, known as Location Asia
- A Bi- Monthly magazine on Satellite Navigation, Positioning and Timing, with a primary target towards the user base in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Europe
- www.location.net.in, a resource portal for the technology developers, application providers and end users in the Positioning and related fields
- A bi weekly newsletter in the field of satellite positioning, navigation and timing. The newsletter is a compilation of products, new application/usage and corporate developments in the area of interest
The year 2006 saw many firsts for GIS Development including the first Location magazine, Map Malaysia and Map Africa conferences, geared to serve as a networking platform for the respective regions and the launch of Map World Forum, a global conference on the geospatial domain, which brought together key organizations from the field on one platform.
Over the past years, GIS Development has created its unique space in the Asian and Middle East Geospatial community in particular and across the globe at large, by becoming the voice and the mirror of many communities. In its own way it has contributed to the development of GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing, Aerial Photography and allied technologies, by bringing forth the development, initiatives and advances in the region.
