Managing huge amount of spatial and non spatial utility data floating between various sectors in Utility
Management Agencies is always being a challenge. Thus, this paper exposes an idea on the potential
application of Geographic Information System (GIS) to effectively tackle the water utility and port data
management issues. The conceptual application framework, design requirements and benefits of adopting
GIS for utility application was discussed based on two worked examples as stated above. The Water
Utility Management System (WUMS 1.0) was developed as a pilot project for Public Works Department
(Water Division), Kedah and successfully applied to manage water utilities at Taman Tiong. The potential
of GIS in port data management was initiated by Bintulu Port Authority (BPA), Sarawak. The GIS based
utility management systems are capable of facilitating in space management and inventory (locations,
utilities and its related facilities, clients and staff information and it attributes in one system). The paper
less approach adopted which comes together with a user friendly interface and access level control
reduces potential data duplication between departments and indirectly reduces management cost.
Beside that, it also can be used in space occupation report preparation, area calculation, availability and
space planning.
