Abstract
GIS (Geographical Information System) is increasingly becoming instrumental, in the public policy realm, to shape and influence the context in which decisions are made. Transportation Infrastructure Management for the Public Works Department, Government of Maharashtra, India has been accomplished through a GIS based Road Information and Management System. The GIS interface of the system is coupled to an attribute information base residing in an RDBMS (Relational Database Management System), thereby providing for extensive database querying in a user-friendly environment. The system has been implemented in all six Chief Engineer offices across the state and is being utilized as an effective decision support tool. Web enabling of the system is in the pipeline to efficiently cater to a larger user base.
