Abstract
Agriculture is always vulnerable to unfavorable weather events and climatic conditions. Despite technological advances, such as improved crop varieties and irrigation systems, weather and climate are still key factors in agricultural productivity. Agriculture is the largest sector of Pakistan economy and less than a one-fifth of Pakistan’s land area has the potential for intensive agricultural use, but outputs are low by world standards. The present research work has been carried out to climatically characterize the country using GIS technique as GIS offers a mechanism to integrate many scales of data developed for agricultural research. Moisture and temperature indexes were used for the study. There are two seasons of crop sowing, Kharif and Rabi, but off season cropping is also practice in some parts of the country. Applying the indexes total of nineteen zones were formed for Rabi, eighteen for Kharif and nine for annual seasons. Each zone has variability in terms of moisture and temperatures. The cropping pattern was analyzed in developed zones and it was found that the current crop practices are suitable according to the climatic conditions of the areas but in some areas the cash crops need to be encouraged.
