Abstract :
The current system of rice area estimation in the Philippines involves quarterly surveys of rice farmers and estimation based on past data trends. Several studies in other countries have shown the possibility of using remote sensing in land-use mapping, and crop inventory and monitoring. This paper presents results of a pilot study in the Philippines using a combination of multi-sensor optical and multi-temporal SAR data for paddy area mapping and rice area estimation. We mapped the paddy areas in Nueva Ecija province and estimated the rice area planted, by municipality and by season, using both optical and SAR images. We present the possibility of integrating results of individual classifications using images from different sensors to arrive at a final paddy area map.
