Abstract
In view of varied physiography of watersheds, conceptual planning is needed for structures like drainage
line treatment and water harvesting structures. It is mandatory to prepare reasonably viable plans to
prevent soil erosion, scouring and siltation. Traditional methods involved in such planning, involve huge
cost and time. Using PAN + LISS III merged satellite imageries, thematic layers such as drainage, water
bodies, land use/land cover, slope, geomorphology and soil types may be derived, which are useful for
locating sites for drainage line treatment and water harvesting structures. An attempt is made here to
demonstrate the application of RS & GIS in one such study in Shimoga district of Karnataka. The district
consists of seven talukas and falls in two Agro- climatic zones viz., southern transition zone, and hilly
zone. The entire district lies in the Malnad region except the eastern part that lies in the Maidan regions.
Gneissic rocks and Dharwar schist are the main rock types. Major rivers of the districts are Tunga, Bhadra,
Tungabhadra and Varada. Based on the thematic layers generated and integration of layers in GIS
domain, 61 vegetative checks, 2145 boulder checks, 1684 drop structures, 602 Nala revetment structures
and 775 rock filled dams have been recommended for drainage line treatment in the district. Further, 573
check dams, 5 Nala bund and 35 vented checks have been recommended for water harvesting. These
structures are expected to improve ground water prospects, required for irrigation and domestic needs.
