Danida – Women and Youth Training and Extension Project

Needs
Phase III of the WYTEP Karnataka program has been envisaged as a final phase. As there are many design elements involved in Danida to gradually withdraw from the project, there was a need for a comprehensive visulisation and decision support tool.. To do this village level information for the state of Karnataka was required.

Problem
Conventional Office programs lacked the visualisation and ability to report on the significance of program.

Solution
Danida Wytep chose a solution based on the Spinfo Karnataka platform that allowed integration of project data that helped in decsion support, and visualisation and communication of project parameters effectively.

Benefits
Dramatically improved the ability to demarcate "Touched" and "Untouched" Villages. Significantly improved Project Planning, and Project Monitoring activities. Communication of Project status and achievement to the Funding Agency also improved.

The Government of India added a new dimension to farmers' training programmes by launching the WYTEP ("Women and Youth Training and Extension Project") project in 1982/83. This project was started with the assistance of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

The purpose of the project was to demonstrate women as potential farmers thereby inducing agriculture department to introduce a component within the general extension system, which could reach out to farm women with relevant extension messages and agriculture knowledge and skill.

Phase III has been envisaged as a final phase of the programme; in it’s design are many elements addressing the need for Danida to gradually withdraw from the project. It is in this context that the GIS application “Spinfo Karnataka 2002” is being tried out as part of Information management for project planning and monitoring.

"Use of this solution clearly shows us where we are and helps us plan our activities"
“The project in its earlier Phases I and II had covered clusters of villages in each taluk; none of the taluks have been covered completely nor can it be said all the eligible farm women have been covered in these villages. So in each taluk we have villages that have been ‘touched’ by WYTEP activities and villages which are ‘untouched’” said Mrs Poornima Vyasulu They have used Spinfo Karnataka to demarcate ‘touched’ villages from ‘untouched’ ones.

The figure shows the district of Koppal. The blue regions signify the villages ‘touched’ by WYTEP. The remaining villages shown in Red are those that are 'untouched' by Danida. “This clearly shows us where we are and helps us plan our activities” added Mrs Poornima Vyasulu.
