ABSTRACT
Ambient Air quality is an important indicator for any nation towards sustainable development and to provide sustainable living to the residents. The large population in metro cities is exposed to the deteriorating air quality containing pollutants due to (Green House Gas) GHG emissions which are the real cause of concern to public health and environment impact. Taking into account these considerations, a system for continuous air quality monitoring is being proposed for the cities under threat that can rapidly and reliably detect and quantify the pollution levels for monitoring by the regulating authorities, to minimize the damage caused due to traffic congestions and burning of fuel, keeping in view the GHG Protocol Standards under IPCC (Inter Government panel for Climate Change).
Here we propose an application model for the city of Hyderabad for studying air quality based on GIS and GPS fitted Vehicles with Sensors making them portable which can disseminate the information on pollution levels at multiple locations simultaneously or all along the Road Network at different time intervals. The Air Quality parameters thus modeled are available for reporting on Web GIS interface to provide Real Time Information Service for increased public awareness and GHG Inventory from transport sector. The air quality levels recorded shall be thematically overlaid on city base map in GIS to allow for tracking air quality based on time period and correlate the same with land use changes to plan for sustainable infrastructure development.
