In the Chad basin and in particular on the southern sides of lake Chad (Chad), the natural environment is organized according to hydrometric and pluviometric conditions. The morphology induces a zoned organization of the plant covering whose little diversified species cover vast homogeneous areas which are comparatively easy to inventory . The balance of this natural environment is dependent upon not only rainfall but also the inputs of the rivers Logone and Chari.
This balance – because it is delicate – has been upset during the last three decades by the drought observed in inter-tropical Africa and in particular in the Sahel, but also by human activity : deforestation, clearing and extending farming space.
A long term analysis – from 1951 to 1994 – has been made to improve the definition of the envrionmental changes of this region using reconnaissance and landscape units cartography, readings, maps, aerial photography and satellite picrures.
Integrating these dota into a geographic information system has been the main tool to manage human resources.
