Abstract :
Spatial data plays an important role in the social and economic growth of the country. Countries showing their concern over the scientific and technological bent of mind have utilized the spatial data successfully for becoming wealthier. The reliable and up-to-date information about the features needs to be generated at regular intervals and that should be readily available without any constraints. The Land is one of the prime assets of a nation. The revenue of the nation and its economic development are dependent on the condition of the land and its usage. The land users need to know information about their surroundings to utilize them in an effective way. The information regarding the land inventories can be published on the net for the use of the land users. The growth of Internet access and use coupled with advancements in web-based technologies over the past decade has provided new possibilities for the access, delivery and use of land features.

This paper envisages the approach adopted for developing a Land Information System (LIS) by using interoperable services. The various benefits and the challenges of using interoperable solutions for LIS are discussed. Geographic Markup Language (GML) is now discussed as one of the important formats, which can address the issues related to the interoperability. The work done on Web Enabled Land Information System (WEB-LIS) using Web Feature Server (WFS) is also presented.
