Powerful and user-friendly geospatial software/ applications and are available today that increase the ease and usage of GIS in many of the government and non-government organizations such as municipalities, planning and architectural firms, and real-estate organizations amongst others.
This paper deals with the development of an automated process for creating longitudinal or cross sectional profiles of area of interest from the base elevation data (i.e. surveyed data). GIS software and tools have been used to create the raw data and then exporting the output in to spread sheet formats for creating sectional profiles for regular planning and analysis purposes. This spreadsheet facility provides an additional benefit if it is easily interpreted by the site personnel who may not be familiar with GIS. This allows a person to access the spreadsheet and create cross sections by selecting the appropriate record.
The processed output is used as raw data for various analyses such as calculating average slope, identification of areas with very steep slopes, and accessibility indexing. This helps in modification of construction guidelines such as the setback distances for instance so that these are practically viable. This tool saves time and resources for creating individual cross sections and helps in preventing costly delays caused by unrealistic guidelines. In projects with frequent terrain variations, such a tool provides immense benefits.
