Although India has vast natural reserves and scenic beauty, tourism sector in India has been largely unexploited and neglected. Much emphasis must be laid on this sector and a professional approach to tap the business and recreational potential is required for the growth in the economy.
Maharashtra (which lies on the western part of India) has tremendous potential for growth and development, considering its geographical location, soothing climate, diverse terrain features that ranges from the plain coastal areas to the western ghats.
Geographical Information System (GIS) with Remote sensing data is very useful in locating suitable sites that can be used as a reference for preparing detailed road maps as well as identifying specific sites for tourism which can finally be a boost to the Indian economy.
In the following study, different sites were analysed using geospatial techniques with the application of GIS and Remote Sensing data to find the site suitability for tourism. Various parameters that were considered for the study are Tourist demand, Infrastructure basic services ,Urban equipment basic services ,Environmental quality ,Superstructure Local community Possession and land value ,Land uses ,Economic Activities ,Historical Occupation. Geospatial techniques enable the planners to identify and locate the probable tourist sites, thus providing the users a comprehensive visual navigation and information database pertaining to that area. Organising and automating the spatial data through GIS technology facilitates the authorities for the development and strategic marketing of the tourism industry in the suitable areas.
