Abstract
In February 2003, the SARS virus emerged in China and subsequently spread to 32 countries. It killed
more than 800 people in the process. The world came to a virtual standstill as the contagious virus froze
travel activities and human contact became taboo. Stock markets crashed. In such scenarios, spatial
analysis offers a powerful tool for preventive disaster management and control. However, spatial analysis
cannot be effective if pertinent data is not available. Today, GPS had made a significant foray in commercial
applications. But GPS has limitations and has limited reach. This presentation discusses a simple but
powerful zoning technology that will empower disaster management agencies to control and manage
zones.
