Coastal Zone Management is becoming more significant as the impact of coastal zone events has the potential to disrupt life and cause significant economic impact. The world has learned about its vulnerability to coastal dangers with events such as the tsunami that impacted Thailand, Cyclones off the coast of India, Hurricanes impacting major Unites States Cities and others. There are also major environmental aspects to coastal zones that have to be managed. Geospatial technology offers solutions to the many facets of the coastal zone information requirements. No longer can the traditional 2D maps be considered the benchmark.. LiDAR data collected in the coastal areas of the united States is used for response and solutions to many coastal zone problems. Traditional applications such as surge modeling and flood plain are still requirements. However many new applications such as Emergency Management, Disaster Response, Evacuation Management, Wetlands Management, Natural Resource Management, and Erosion Control are now in use and driving demand for high accuracy data only available form LiDAR. LiDAR technology offers a significant benefit to gathering the required information in coastal zones.
