Shoreline Changes : New Tools And Techniques For Measurement, Interpretations And Presentation

Abstract :
'Shorelines of Pak Phanang, Thailand within a period between 1973 and 2003 have been digitized from topographic maps and Landsat satellite images, and their changes were monitored within a GIS environment. Shoreline migration at regular intervals along the 58km shore have been studied using USGS Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) in a classical transect based approach. As a complementary parcel approach, a new geoprocessing tool "Change Analysis across Linear Boundaries" have been developed. This tools can facilitate the study of changes in coastal land. Multitemporal shoreline change data from DSAS was processed within a DBMS environment, and subjected to euclidean squared distance based agglomerative hierarchical clustering. Resultant clusters were used to produce a finer resolution coast classifcation based on the shore migration signatures during the period. Further automated data processing facilitates a GIS map of the classified coast. A new shoreline change visualization tool was developed to produce spatially coincident GIS based charting. Charting of changes right on the maps or images in this way produces visually pleasing and easily comprehensible maps on-the-fly. Finally a simple MapObject application "EzViz : All-in-One-Screen GIS data viewer" was developed. This data viewer is intended to be used by the plannners, coastal managers and community educators with no or very little knowledge of using GIS packages. Maps and satellite images used in this study were both temporaly and spatially inconsitent, limiting the clarity of results. However, these tools can be very promising in measuring, presenting and interpreting shoreline changes even by non-technical persons.
