Abstract
This project is aimed to document the biodiversity of Kodagu.The findings were used for developing GIS maps, which would be displayed in the Kodagu Interpretation Center (KIC). This Interpretation Center facilitates to familiarize visitors to socio-cultural, ecological and economic aspects of Kodagu, highlights the uniqueness of this evergreen and deciduous ecosystem of Kodagu, sensitize visitors and residents to conservation needs of the area, makes available information on all aspects of living and non-living environment and orient and educate residents and visitors and in turn support enlightened tourism.
Major Environmental Issues and Problems in Kodagu
- Depletion of Forest cover due to indiscriminate felling
- Felling in ‘Devara Kadus’, ‘Paisaries’, reserve forests
- Pollution of Cauvery due to coffee pulping effluents
- Increased urbanization and commercialization
An approach based on Geographical Information System (GIS) becomes necessary to find efficient, fast and economic solution to achieve the needs of Interpretation Center and to solve the complicated Environmental Issues and problems.
The problems like encroachment of reserve forest can be clearly seen and Demonstrated by using GIS.
In this paper an attempt is made to highlight the Environmental issues and Problems and a Solution to these problems using Geographic Information System (GIS).
