Among the Various gifts of nature to mankind water is most important of all. Groundwater accounts for 25% of the fresh water supply for agricultural, industrial and domestic use. The characterstic features of climate of the Barmer district are it’s dryness, extremes of temperature and erratic rainfall. Even during monsoons the air is dry in between the fitful spell of rain. With the increase in population in the district and compulsion of bringing more areas under irrigation has resulted in over exploitation of groundwater. Judicious use of groundwater and intensive efforts for it’s recharge requires detailed account of various characterstics of groundwater distribution over different parts of district .
Our study has revealed that, out of the total area of 28387 sq km of Barmer district, about 80% of the area is covered by moderate to poor quality of water in places characterized having geomorphology of ravines and pediment and only 4% of the area is covered by good quality of water in places characterized having geomorphology of alluvial plain and flood plain. The aim of our paper is to demarcate groundwater prospect zone in Barmer District .
