Abstract
Marine and Atmospheric Geographical Information System (MAGIS) is a GIS software, which aims at the management, analysis and visualization of marine and atmospheric environmental data. MAGIS is basically a seamless integration of three modules: data management, spatio-temporal analysis, and data visualization.
In this paper, the importance and necessity of applying GIS in marine research are first presented. The overall design, functions, workflow and major features of MAGIS are then explained. A typical workflow of this system with a spatio-temporal analysis (including fundamental statistics, regression, harmonic analysis etc.) of 10-year of satellite global seal level data is carried out. As a result, the fundamental characteristics of global sea level variations from annual to decadal time scales are obtained. Finally, the perspective of MAGIS is discussed.
