Salih Town Planning Department, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Municipalities and Agriculture Department, UAE Abstract Town Planning (TP) as the part of Abu Dhabi Municipality is the governmental authority being in charge of all the aspects of physical planning. Jurisdiction area covers Capital Region and Western Region, which represent over 85% of Abu Dhabi Emirate. Through several Sections TP carries out different levels of planning activities - from regional level to the detailed planning of land division. Also controls the development and fulfillment of these planning strategy. Simply saying TP is behind approving designs for new underground utilities that are to be constructed. Thus it is very important to have exact, accurate locationally base map data and information about already existing installation. This paper is to present utility part of GIS database of Abu Dhabi Town Planning. We want to go through the history of database creation, indicate data sources and their quality. Also we will indicate difficulties and problems during data conversion as well as the way in which we have overcome it. The biggest challenge for our organization is to maintain proper updating level of data set and to enhance records for all inhibited and under development areas. One of the best ways to achieve such a goal is to engage other utility agencies to take part in updating process. As the ultimate objective is to get exact location of newly built underground utility before covering by direct field survey. This data should be coming from above Agencies and their Contractors/Consultants could perform the survey work. However such an approach requires decisions on very high level.
