The construction industry has primarily been a unique set of federated workflows (planning, design, survey, estimating, earthworks, maintain, and operate) where each of these processes have been addressed by separate companies and industry groups. The end result of each of these processes was usually a set of paper, tabular, or written plans, tables, or documents which were then transferred to the owner of the next process. This led to inefficiencies in the construction processes and sometimes resulted in large and expensive rework. The construction industry has now started using positioning and information technology in each of these processes to improve the productivity of each process. Future technology improvements in the construction industry will consist of its using digital data as a media to connect the processes of the construction industry and create new integrated solutions that reduce rework and improve productivity.
