All urban settlements subsist on land; it is a Land that constitutes the single most important Component of the total environment. The studies on various human settlement analysis shows that the rapid and haphazard nature of urban sprawl and increasing population pressure is resulting in deterioration of infrastructure facilities, loss of productive agricultural lands, open spaces, loss of surface water bodies, depletion of ground water aquifer zones, water contamination, health hazards and many micro-climatic changes. Therefore, the environmentally compatible and economically viable urban planning must begin with a comprehensive look on the use of land. It is in this regard a master plan for the whole city is made every 5 to 10 years by the department of town and country planning.
As a case study Indore Development Authority (IDA) was considered which works as a planning and development agency i.e. it works for the development of the city keeping in view the guidelines provided in the master plan. Now, in implementing all these guidelines Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques can play a major role by providing reliable, accurate, timely and periodic spatial and non spatial data, and methods to integrate them in order to create various planning scenarios for decision making. These types of planning scenarios help planners and administrators to view various advantages and disadvantages of different perspectives and select the best plan for implementation and monitoring.
A development plan using GIS was proposed for a township in Indore City, by performing the site suitability analysis for various facilities and services. Along with it various analysis and tasks are performed such as Network analysis, catchment’s delineation, web publication and 3D modeling (for better visualization). Finally the whole application was customized as per the Authority’s requirements.
