GIS has emerged as an efficient tool in planning, monitoring and managing of urban issues / activities where large scale digital base maps plays a significant roll in providing the graphical base as a prerequisite to GIS. Availability / use of accurate and detailed map of urban areas undoubtedly rewnders the job of town planners, municipal administrators and urban facility providers much easy and systematic.

The paper discuss how these maps could be prepared using latest state of the art technology, the prospective and present users in the country and cost aspects.

NRSA possesses necessary facilities undewr one roof to serve as a facility provider and end product generator for solving various urban issues through GIS and urban base maps. The state of the art technology NRSA possesses are (a) extensively modified aircraft fitted with computer controlled navigation system for efficient aerial photographic coverage (c) digital orthophoto and soft copy photogrammetry system for generating digital elevation models and map alternatives at a much less cost and time (d) a host of analytical photogrammetry systems for large scale mapping.

NRSA has prepared large scale urban base maps on 1:2,500 scale for 25 towns in different parts of India for Town & Country Planning Organisation, Delhi. At present for planning, execution of infrastructure and utilities of Hyderabad city, detailed digital maps are being prepared for Hyderabad Metro Water & Sewerage Board, which could set a trend in the country for the urban infrastructure providers in making use of the digital map base and GIS.
