A decade ago, scientists and researchers have set ground rules to build, manage and maintain geological
databases taking into consideration data diversity, format and volumes. The probability of creating a
successful geological database can be increased by careful consideration of the followings:The objective of
the database will meet?, Why a database is considered? , When if ever, will the cost and effort of creating
the database be repaid?, How will the database be designed and created? , Where are the users? and
finally who will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the database? In today’s information world,
the technology encompassing software, hardware, and models to build databases are well advance. But
the fine line between successful or failed geological database relies on the ability to turn huge amount of
data into information that is critical for decision making, assessments and planning.Experienced, dedicated,
and well motivated professional geologists, engineers, petrophysicists, and geophysicists should
take advantage of the technological advancements to be at the forefront of database build up and turn
data into valuable information.
