GIS system in PETRONAS, known as PIRI GIS, was launched in January 2006 and has been successfully
utilized for planning of various work scope in E&P industry. All decisions taken must be accurate without
jeopardizing the final product or results. Resources provided need to be wisely maintained with respect to
time and cost. Drilling at wrong locations or platform anchors hitting pipelines are some examples of
improper data utilization. Data without geodetic description are commonly encountered not only during
70’s, 80’s, and 90’s but even today. Confusions in applying correct geodetic parameter, or even a case of
incorrect conversions or transformations, could lead to irreversible consequences. Incorrect application of
datum, spheroid and projection could shift intended locations up to 400 metres off. This geomatic application
is even more critical as PETRONAS expands its activities abroad and involved with new datasets
and coordinate systems. Knowledge and understanding of geodetic parameter is therefore crucial to
ensure data integrity, hence the role of Geomatics discipline to alleviate E&P GIS to some level of
standard. It is not limited only in ensuring data integrity but also establishing procedures and standards
in spatial data management in PETRONAS.
