Abstract
Petroleos Mexicanos -PEMEX-, created the Corporate Information System (SICORI) to generate a flow of
information to support operations in the Corporative and Subsidiary agencies specialized in exploration,
production, distribution, petrochemistry, refining and gas. SICORI has implemented a geospatial database
constructed according to the guidelines and standards set out by the Open Geospatial Consortium
(OGC), in order to integrate the geographic position of their strategic facilities, including the environment
and social information. The information generated has also been used in environmental management
and national security activities. Federal government of Mexico gave SICORI the task of seeking new
geographical platforms without requiring investment for them, so in 2005, SICORI ventured into 3D
technology through World Wind using the open source technology from the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). GEO-PEMEX 3D was thus developed based on the open source technology
of World Wind. The application has been very helpful for the environment protection and the petroleum
industry activities in order to improve their operations. This system has; Satellite images of different
resolutions, Mapping integration of all subsidiary facilities, Integration of Orthophotos of different resolutions
with nationwide coverage, Integration of digital mapping of the Ministry of National Defense of
Mexico (SEDENA), Municipalities Information, number of inhabitants of Mexico; Agrarian Information
from the National Agrarian Registry (RAN); Monitoring facilities in real time. Henceforth PEMEX believes
that the application, GEO-MEXICO 3D, can be used by the Federal Government, in order to support the
tasks against organized crime, drug trafficking, national security, civil protection, among others.
