Chennai being a highly populated city; accordingly the usage of Public transport has also enhanced. Among these, the MTC buses form the backbone of local public transport. A major percentage of Chennai public use buses as their daily transport. But, the major set back is the disorganized and random staging of the bus-stops and the improper charging of the bus fares irrespective of he distance of the bus-stops. This insists for the rationalization of bus-stops at proper distances and charging fare on per km basis. The project aims at proposal for new locations of bus-stops for certain routes in the city through field survey. It involves the spatial information system, an interface that will show Chennai city map with areas demarcated. On the basis of the geographical position as input in the form of 2 bus-stops, from and destination, the application will have the capability to integrate the spatial attributes with the non spatial database. The result will be all the bus services and their corresponding fares calculated on per km basis between the 2 bus-stops specified as input. The spatial database is maintained in the Shape file format while MS ACCESS is used to store the non-spatial database. ArcView 9.2 is used to generate the Shape files, which can be superimposed on the satellite image to get a real time view of the Chennai city. The vector file will be associated with the database tables. All the bus-stops are tied up with its geographical coordinates, which are useful in mapping it on the vector map. The interface will show the Chennai city map with the new location of bus-stops. The project is planned to maintain a status report of the MTC services after these developments and the feedback of the public is obtained. The project will be submitted to the MTC as a proposal for the improvisation of their services. The future plan of this project aims at creation of a sample module named ‘Automatic Ticket Vending Machine’.
