Introduction
GIS is innately collaborative in nature and illustrates relationships, connections and patterns in datasets. GIS has unique integrating capabilities of bringing together datasets from different sources for visual displays and analysis. Typically GIS datasets are interrelated and often very large. This data usually comes from across an organization and increasingly from outside sources. Therefore, GIS datasets are distributed, dynamic and heterogeneous. Consequently, standards and interoperability have always been an integral part of GIS. This reliance on standards and interoperability has only deepened as GIS has moved from being a tool for individual projects and departments to becoming the framework for spatial data infrastructures for sharing information among organizations and across society. Interoperability enables data sharing between organizations and across applications and platforms which results in the enhanced generation and sharing of information making it more useful. The goal of standards and interoperability has been to help GIS users build working systems that are practical to implement, easy to use and easily integrated with the existing IT environments like e-Governance.

Understanding the GIS interoperability specifications and standards must fit within the context of broad and widely adopted computing industry standards; GIS Development Branch is organizing a Training Workshop on Standards & Interoperability from 5-7 August, 2007

COURSE OUTLINE
Training course is designed for GIS professionals, GIS Managers, software engineers and data modelers. Valuable to technical managers who are looking for a road map for integrating geospatial standards in their existing systems or incorporating them in future ones, the course provides a high level view of relevant OGC, ISO and other specifications and standards, without going too deep into the technical details. An invaluable resource for professionals / managers new to GIS or poised to oversee GIS implementation in their existing or planned applications within the organizations.

An interactive 3 days Training Workshop will focus on
  • The evolution of spatial standards with the development of new technologies, such as Web Services, and overview of interoperability.
  • Understanding of the elements required to enable geospatial interoperability within their organizations.
  • Working analysis of geospatial interoperability vocabulary, standards and technologies for rapid implementation of spatial components in applications.
  • Data or Data Access: to deal with data modeling and encoding
  • Coordinate/spatial reference systems,
  • Metadata and catalog Access,
  • Geoprocessing Services: WCS, WMS, WFS;
  • Maps and visualization
  • Knowledge of GML and building GML Application Schema, OGC GML standards, History & Technological Overview, GML Model Overview, GML Application Schema Design, GML styling – visualizing GML data
  • Introduction to KML
  • GEO RSS
