Centre for Spatial Database Management and Solutions (CSDMS) was established in April 1997, realizing the need for an organization to devote itself to promote and propagate about the potential usage of GIS and related technologies in various areas of development. A group of professionals from different fields with common cause formed CSDMS in April 1997 at New Delhi. 

Objective
Geographic Information system (GIS) has been recognized worldwide as a Decision Support System to help in effective planning and implementation of various development related activities in view of rapid growth, high urbanization, industrialization rates and extensive environmental degradation causing continuously increasing complications.

Although, GIS has become a common word in developed countries, it remains in labs in India and other South Asian countries. Community at large is not aware of the technology and its simplicity as a tool to solve day to day problems of the common man. 

CSDMS is formed with the objective to create awareness about GIS and its potential usage in various areas of activities in the South Asian Region. Its mandate is also to assist countries of South Asian Region in formulating their policies and strengthening their capabilities in all aspects of Geographic Information Infrastructure. 

Program CSDMS program includes:
  • Publication of a monthly magazine namely "GIS at Development" having over 20,000 readership circulation worldwide. GIS@development is Asia's first GIS/GPS and Remote Sensing publication.
  • Organizing Annual Conferences & Exhibitions at Global and South Asian Level to provide a Forum for various stakeholders to discuss and develop means and ways of collaboration for maximum utilization of the potential of GIS. These conferences have proved to be well represented by Government, industry, users, academicians and NGOs from across the world. Map India is the largest annual event in GIS in Asia with a participation of 500-700 delegates every year. Map India 2001, 4th Annual International conference and exhibition, is scheduled in February in New Delhi, India. 
  • Organizing application specific workshops. Launched its training facilities and have developed and designed comprehensive training modules. 
  • Pursuing the cause of GIS community at various forums especially with policy-making authorities for availability of databases which is the raw material for any GIS Solution.
  • Co-ordination between concerned agencies in South Asian countries.

Launched first GIS portal site http://www.gisdevelopment.net  in collaboration with Act Now Infotech Pvt. Ltd.
