Bentley International User Conference
Keith emphasized the need for integration of the three fundamental aspects of E/C/O
Bentley Launches the Viecon Public Works Network
Bentley Unveils MicroStation GeoGraphics iSpatial Edition
September 17-21, 2000,Pennsylvania Convention Centre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , USA
Philadelphia, Bentley International User Conference-Today, Bentley Systems, began its annual international user conference for 2,500 attendees from 40 countries. keynotes presented some of the technical and business innovations the company will provide for its users in engineering, construction and operations (E/C/O) over the next twelve months.
Working Together with Technology
Company founder and chief technology officer Keith Bentley described how the company will continue to improve the way Bentley software products work with each other and with other E/C/O technology.
Keith's presentation included a sneak preview of next version of MicroStation®, code-named "V8," expected to be available in mid-2001. He explained that MicroStation's DGN format has been expanded to include the data types in the current DGN plus those in the DWG file format. Therefore, MicroStation V8 can edit either file type without translation loss. In a demonstration, users saw MicroStation V8 directly reading and writing DWG files.
In addition, V8 addresses hundreds of user-requested changes including unlimited levels, unlimited reference file attachments, unlimited design file and cell size, unlimited undo, automatic object locating, multi-format text, paragraphs, native TrueType fonts; text masking, display priority, and other enhancements for drafting and 3D modeling.
"Creation of the design information is only the first step in the life cycle of an asset," Keith stated. He asserted that only when the design data can be searched in terms of "components" such as guard rails or valves will Internet-based business-to-business transactions such as procurement be practical. "In the next twelve months, Bentley will advance MicroStation, ProjectWise®, Viecon.com and ProjectBankTM technology - while incorporating aecXML - to make e-business a reality for our users," Keith added. Using ProjectBank technology and aecXML, Bentley demonstrated how all the light fixtures in the plans for an office building could be automatically surveyed, specified and prepared for bid over Viecon.com in a matter of seconds.
Bentley's web-enabled technology and services empower engineering firms to improve Management of Public Works Infrastructure
The third essential element for enabling efficient E/C/O networks is Web-based collaboration. Bentley introduced Viecon.com, its extranet offering, this summer. At the user conference, Keith Bentley showed MicroStation V8 connecting directly to Viecon.com to transfer design files, including all referenced files and project-based standards. He also displayed design information from Viecon.com transmitted via aecXML. Working Together with Bentley
"In addition to understanding our users' technology requirements, we also appreciate their business challenges," stated Greg Bentley, the company's CEO. "To help our users meet these challenges, we offer both perpetual and term licenses for our software, and have now added per-project licensing."
Bentley Launches the Viecon Public Works Network
On 19th of Sept 2000, Bentley System launched the Viecon Public Works Network. This initiative will develop a network of strategic business alliances with engineering firms who will bring Web-based technologies to their municipal clients to improve the management of public infrastructure assets.
The Viecon Public Works Network is designed to tackle municipal asset management by providing engineering firms with Web-based technologies that allow them to power a whole new relationship with their municipal clients. With Bentley technology, engineering firms and their municipal clients can collaborate online to develop a wide array of applications to improve the life-cycle maintenance of roads, bridge, water and sewer, buildings and grounds.
The Viecon Public Works Network is a new approach to municipal asset and infrastructure management, allowing the relationship between the municipal organization and their trusted engineering firm to be strengthened by Bentley's Viecon technology. Public works professionals, engineering consultants and others will be able to work together via the Internet with the shared goal of improved asset management, increased government efficiency, and improved public service.
Public Works professionals, the street inspector, permit officers, engineering consultants and the general public will have better access to this infrastructure asset information over the Web via Bentley and the participating Viecon Public Works Network firms. This access will reduce the time and cost restrictions of these interactions for an ultimately more efficient experience for all involved.
Bentley Unveils MicroStation GeoGraphics iSpatial Edition
At Bentley International User Conference 17-21 sept, Bentley Systems announced MicroStation GeoGraphics® iSpatial Edition, part of the MicroStation GeoGraphics SELECT Series - a continual enhancement program for MicroStation GeoGraphics users.
MicroStation GeoGraphics iSpatial Edition enables creation and maintenance of spatial information directly in Oracle 8i Spatial. An increasing number of organizations are utilizing Oracle to manage data across the enterprise, and Oracle 8i Spatial enables spatial indexing and storage of this data. The demonstrations during the conference showed how the MicroStation GeoGraphics iSpatial Edition becomes an extremely powerful editor of OpenGIS-compliant data stored directly in Oracle 8i Spatial.
MicroStation GeoGraphics iSpatial Edition is built using the SDODGN API, which is delivered as part of the product. Sample applets and applications can be found at Bentley's online developer support site.
