Map India 2001 : Report

7 - 9 February 2001, New Delhi, India


Map India 2001, 4th annual International conference and exhibition in the field of mapping technologies like Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) Aerial photography (AP) and Remote Sensing (RS) was held between 7-9 of February, 2001. The conference was organised by Centre for Spatial Database Management and Solutions (CSDMS). There were over 1000 participants to the conference and exhibition, which included top decision makers from government and private sectors, existing as well as prospective users, academicians, vendor, policy makers and representatives of various international organisations. Autodesk India Pvt.Ltd., Hewlett Packard, Mappls, Rolta India Ltd. and Tata Infotech Ltd. were the Industry partners.

The theme of the conference was "Mobile Mapping" which focused on the strategies, the utilities and development and application of such technology for mapping and other commercial uses.

Dr. M P Narayanan, President CSDMS, welcomed the delegates to the fourth successive year of Map India 2001. Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Honorable Chief Minister of the National Capital Region of Delhi, inaugurated the conference by lighting the lamp and delivered the inaugural address at the conference where Honorable Minister emphasized on the need of mapping as the solution for the holistic rural and urban planning. Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Honorable Union Minister for Rural Development, during his address to the conference, stressed on the importance of GIS in Rural Development and Land Information System. Shri Suresh P. Prabhu, Honorable Minister for Power gave the Presidential Address where he accentuated the need of GIS as an integrating tool for infrastructural development.

This three-day conference provided an international platform for professionals to exchange new ideas, technologies and their application in GIS and related fields. The conference brought together eminent personalities, Dr. David Maguire, Director, ESRI Inc., Trevor Westlake, Vice President, MapInfo-Asia Pacific, Bradford P. Sharp, Director Autodesk Inc., Preetha Pulusani, Executive Vice President, Intergraph Corp., Dr. A. K. S. Gopalan, Director, Space Application Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad, John Allan, Director, ERDAS Inc. and Ajay Seth, Leica Geosystems Ltd. in the fields of GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing to exchange ideas and discuss emerging technologies as they delivered their Keynote Addresses during the Keynote Sessions that highlighted advanced technologies like Mobile Mapping, Internet GIS and High Resolution Imagery & Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and thus also provided a learning opportunity for aspiring professionals. Several technical sessions were organised in the conference on various applications of Geographic Information Systems. It highlighted relevant technologies and applications of GIS in the varied fields of health, earth sciences, natural resource management, agriculture, urban planning, transportation, education and training infrastructure, internet GIS application, business GIS, emerging technologies for urban mapping and rural development. These were organised in various technical sessions.

The highlight of the conference was the showcase of Indian success stories using GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing and Mobile Mapping for the common man usage. The sessions were chaired and co-chaired by various eminent personalities. This facilitated interaction amongst experts and senior decision-makers in the country for the use of Mobile Mapping as a tool for data collection, collation and distribution and increase usage in government, public and private sectors.

Parallel to the conference, an exhibition on the state of the art technology was also organised. Dr. M. P. Narayanan, President CSDMS, inaugurated the Exhibition. The 35 exhibitors displayed their latest products, technology and applications. The exhibitors profile include Autodesk India, Bentley Systems, ESRI India, ERDAS India, Rolta India, Hewlett Packard, Pentasoft Technologies, CE Infosystems, NRSA, Tata Infotech Ltd., SPINFO, Riding Consulting, East View Inc., Leica Geosystems Ltd., Siemens Informations Systems Ltd., PCI Geomatics, RMSI, Surya Soft-Tech, Co-ordinates.

The conference included an interesting panel discussion among the experts. The panelist were Amitabh Pande, Joint sectary, Department of Science and Technology, Ajay Lavakre, CEO, RMSI, Mukund Rao, Dy. Director, EOS, ISRO, R. K. Verma, CEO, CE Info systems and it was coordinated by Dr. M. P. Narayanan, President, CSDMS. The awareness surrounding the new technologies in GIS, its growth into new regions and an expanding client base was released in this conference. The new opportunities, ideas and potentials that were discussed during the course of the conference were formulated into a list of recommendations, these recommendations were adopted after a detailed discussion among the panelists and the participants and were presented by Ravi Gupta, Director, CSDMS.

The valedictory session saw the launch of Devinfo - a common database on social development indicators prepared by the UN System in India, in collaboration with the Government of India. It was formally launched by Shri B. S. Rawat, Hon'ble Minister of State for Science & Technology, Government of India in presence of Shri Ashok Yadav, Hon'ble Minister for Tourism of Government of Uttar Pradesh who presided over the function. Guest of Honour, Dr. Brenda Gael McSweeney, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident representative were present to grace the occasion

The conference concluded with the presentation of awards during the valedictory session. Presentation of these awards marked the effort to acknowledge and honour the high performers in Indian GIS fraternity. Shri. B.S. Rawat Honorable Minister of State for Science and Technology Government of India presented the awards to the winners, which was decided by an opinion poll conducted during the event. Ashok Yadav Honorable Minister for Tourism Government of Uttar Pradesh, and Brenda Gael Mcsweeny UN Resident Coordinator graced the occasion.   • GIS Professional of The Year - Ravi Gupta, DIRECTOR CSDMS.
Apart from the above following are the Map India awards
  • Map India Award for Best Exhibitor- Bentley Systems Pty Ltd.

  • Map India Award for best paper presentation- Fleet Management using GPS and GIS
    Mr. Pradeep Singh Kharola (IAS), B. Gopalkrishna, (IPS), D. C. Prakash, (MIS), Bangalore Meteropolitan Transportation Corporation, Bangalore .
The occasion was also graced by the eminent dignitaries from International Organisation such as Mr. Peter Holland, General Manager (AUSLIG), Prof. Karl Harmsen, Former Rector ITC, The Netherlands, Bob Samborski, Executive Director GITA, Dr. Tania Maria Sausen, INEP Brasil, Prof. M.J.P.M. Lemmens, Delft University, The Netherlands & Editor GIM International. An overwhelming presence by over thousand delegates and thirty five exhibitors representing a cross-section of entire GIS community including Government, Corporate, NGOs, Academia and over thirty five exhibitors made the occasion India's largest ever gathering of GIS professionals.

IMPLEMENTATION
A core group of CSDMS, DST, DOS and other interested parties to further champion and monitor the progress of the Map India 2001 recommendations.
