Map India 2002 : Recommendations

6 - 8 February 2002, Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi, India

  1. Year 2002 to be declared as the 'Year of maps'.
On 10th April 2002, it will be 200 years of the beginning of the GTS, one the most challenging scientific expedition ever carried out. The government of India is planning a major celebration this year, which will include among many other things, release of a commendatory stamp. This is a commendable step.

Map India urges the government to take this opportunity to declare the year 2002 as the 'Year of the Maps'. This will bring the much need attention to this sector.

  2. Restructuring and Reforms in National Mapping Agencies
The National Mapping Agencies need to restructure and reorganise according to the customer needs and aspirations.

The NMAs should develop a corporate outlook. They need to right size and develop a strategy to become not only market-friendly but also profitable.

  3. GPS Growth
Major reduction in the custom duty on GPS imports is needed. Govt. may deal separately with navigation & geodetic GPS. While navigation GPS can be opened/unrestricted, govt. can continue to have regulation for geodetic GPS. GPS production should be encouraged in the hardware parks being setup by various central and state organisations.

Map India urges the government to help the GPS usage grow. This will help in increasing creating mapping awareness at a faster rate.

  4. Aerial Photography
In view of the high resolution satellite imagery (up to ½ metre or more, available openly to foreign countries) the restriction on Aerial Photography has become irrelevant. Government is requested to review the restrictive policy on Aerial Photography urgently.

  5. National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI)
There is a need to expedite and consolidate the NSDI initiative. The role of NGO and the private sector in the development of NSDI needs to looked into in great detail.
