Educating The Future
Charles Leadbeater is a leading authority on innovation and creativity, with an extensive career with government and private companies both in the UK and worldwide. He is an advisor to the Department for Education’s Innovation Unit on future strategies for more networked and personalised approaches to learning and education. GeoConnexion met Charles Leadbeater at the recent OS Terra Future event, where he was presenting, and asked him to comment on GIS as a part of the national A-level curriculum and the potential implications this could have.
Geographic Information In Forensic Investigation
Hawkins is one of the few organisations in the world with expertise in Forensic Geology. Traces of soil from vehicles or shoes can be analysed to establish their origin. The relative abundances of fossilised micro-organisms (micropalaeontology) can show very accurately where a soil sample originated. For example, in the Soham Murder Enquiry, we were appointed by the Police to assist with finding the precise origin of soil deposits found on the underside of Ian Huntley’s car.

GI Data Integration And Publishing
Much has been made of the Government’s transformational agenda in recent years. Local Government has had to deal with a barrage of new thinking, priority outcomes, targets and now national indicators. There’s even a new UK Location Strategy to deal with. Throughout Government has been keen to emphasise that this means better services for citizens and businesses and a better deal for taxpayers

The Government’s Planning Portal
34 Local Planning Authorities (LPA) across the length and breadth of the country have participated in the trial of the e-Consultation Hub – a large national project aimed at making consultation on planning applications quicker, more effective and transparent. Launched in spring 2008 by the Planning Portal and funded by CLG to help drive and enhance the Government’s modernisation agenda, the Hub has been introduced to provide all the stakeholders in the planning process with the capability to complete both their internal and external consultations online.

A New Direction
In a traditional survey firm, data are collected as needed for each project. The surveyors provide clients with standard deliverables that they think the clients should have--generally in a CAD drawing or blue line format--at the price they think their work commands. The data are then stored with the project details in some type of file.

Pilgrim’s Progress
In 1620, the Pilgrims rounded the north tip of Cape Cod and anchored at what is now Provincetown Harbor, Mass. During the next few days, explorations were made from this harbor by Myles Standish and company culminating in the discovery and subsequent theft of corn at what we now call Corn Hill in Truro. That theft caused the “first encounter” with the Native Americans at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, Mass.

SBAS Interference
GPS C/A codes present cross-correlation peaks that can potentially cause false acquisitions. They can also create tracking errors and C/N0 degradation, not in traditional GPS tracking situations, but for applications where signals are received with a low Doppler difference. Several applications present a low relative Doppler, thus causing more frequent Doppler collision and this type of interference.

Precise Point Positioning
MORE THAN 10 YEARS AGO in an Innovation column, I wrote, "Although RTK is the latest word, or should we say acronym, in GPS positioning, it will not be the last. Scientists and engineers will continue to invent faster, more accurate, more convenient, and more reliable ways to use GPS in navigation, surveying, and a host of other areas, some of which we haven't even dreamt of yet."

Communication on the Road
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) enable or enhance a suite of safety features by combining GPS and short-range wireless communication. The allocation of the 5.9 MHz radio spectrum for highway safety and traffic efficiency applications using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) has given automotive manufacturers the ability to go beyond traditional sensor-based safety features to provide drivers with another sense.

Indoor Message System Evaluated
Public and commercial services such as search-and-rescue, firefighting, and location-based services (LBS) require accurate indoor position determination. Users face the fundamental problem of knowing location at the room level, requiring accuracies on the order of a few meters.

Emergency Management In Scottish Borders
Responding to a major emergency poses challenges not only for the organisation tasked with dealing with it but also the individuals who have to manage impact and restoration. Each year, millions of pounds are spent by companies on planning and preparing their response to emergencies but they often overlook, or don’t adequately address, the mundane and simple things – the things that make the difference.

First Responders With Capturx For ArcGIS
Like most cities, the City of Nashua, New Hampshire, relies on GIS systems to help track and coordinate a range of city services, assets and activities. Data is collected through activities across the city and then centrally stored and analyzed in ArcGIS.

Smarter Searches: Technology Merges Images, Data and Knowledge
Let's say you're looking for a one-bedroom apartment in northeast Dallas that has a grocery store, Catholic church and health club within walking distance, costs less than $800 a month and has both high-speed Internet access and a low crime rate. Finding that dream apartment could take awhile right now. But technology under development by UT Dallas researchers aims to speed such a search, enabling people to find the perfect place today and move in tomorrow.
The View from Here: Will GPS-enabled Laptops Use Desktop GIS Products?
A press release from Qualcomm highlighting how desktop GIS and LBS applications will take advantage of its new 3G/GPS chip, the Gobi, got me thinking about the future of what we now call desktop GIS. That's the typically large software install, with local data and lots of analytical power. While it may tap into data or even services from the Web, its core use is local data crunching and map design.

The Elephant is Ready to Race: Geospatial Data Initiatives and Perspectives from India - Part 1
Rapid advancements in technology, especially in the realms of data management and dissemination systems, the Internet, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) - and in particular geospatial systems - have completely changed the face of the world today. These developments, in turn, have heralded a new era of technology transformation, from traditional data sharing and analytical systems to high powered and superior 4D analytical systems.

The Geospatial Quadrant
In a recent podcast, I discussed a new categorization and profile for the geospatial technology industry that I called the "Geospatial Quadrant" (GQ). I received many comments on the GQ, and in response to them let me further define the quadrant extents and boundaries. Many people asked me if the GQ has a "magic quadrant." It does not. The question references Gartner's "magic quadrant," that market research company’s diagram which describes a market or industry.

GeoTemporal Reasoning in a Web 3.0 World
The Semantic Web envisages software agents that know how to reason over activities, events, locations, people, companies, and their inter-relationships. Learning more about customers through behavioral and Activity Recognition is here today through currently available Semantic Technologies and is a showcase for how these technologies will evolve. This article describes real world examples of Activity Recognition using a combination of industry standard RDF and OWL, reasoning with basic Geotemporal primitives and some well-known Social Network Analytics.

How can geospatial solutions capture more of the IT budget?
IT departments are being forced to become more process oriented, which is a good thing. Instead of just being stewards of all the infrastructure and applications, IT is being held accountable for process outcomes and the support of business objectives. Geospatial tools are inline with this growing trend, with an increasing number of vendors marketing solutions and services in addition to platforms.

Is Real-time Geodata Important?
Ten year's ago real-time geodata was more or less a dream. Five year's ago most people began to see more real-time data and were talking about it, but it was still something for the adventurous with deep pockets, who could afford to acquire it, process it and distribute it in a useful manner. This is changing as digital sensors, hardware ...
