Comparing 3D-Earth Viewers
The authors consider and compare three standard 3D-Earth viewers: Google Earth, MSN Virtual Earth 3D and NASA’s World Wind. Each is combined with OGC Services to examine their performance in disseminating geo-information to the general public.

Hazard Mapping and GIS
The authors describes his development which is a system called RAMMS (Rapid Mass Movements) comprising avalanche, debris-flow and rock-fall, protect and visualisation modules linked to a GIS.

Integrating GPS and SAR
Subsidence of the earth's surface in hilly terrain and densely forested or urbanised areas caused by underground mining is difficult to monitor using terrestrial land-survey methods. Such difficulties can be overcome with a combination of spaceborne SAR and GPS.

The Importance of Compliance Testing
The article describes the Open Geospatial Consortium Inc. (OGC) Compliance Testing Program and explains why it’s important for providers and users of geospatial technologies to take advantage of this program.

Open Geospatial Connection
People who don’t work in the software industry often confuse the terms "open source" and "open standards." The write-up examines what these phrases mean, how they’re different and how both contribute to an "open community" that benefits all players.

What Can the Web Do for "Geo" and Vice Versa?
The Web has had an enormous impact on the geospatial industry. The GeoWeb is maturing at a rapid rate, and we increasingly see "geo" becoming interwoven with the Web and other information technology areas.

Simulia Abaqus for Disaster Modeling
The write-up reports on use of the SIMULIA Abaqus Unified FEA software for dynamic 3D modelling of natural disasters, including earthquakes and tsunamis.

Maps Help in Flight on African Poverty
The author looks at how maps are used to examine the multidimensional factors that impact on programmes to implement poverty reduction in Africa.

Bridging the Economic Divide in Africa
Jim Baumann describes how GIS and remote sensing help manage agricultural and health challenges in Cameroon and Ethiopia.

Designing an Open Coastal SDI
Laura Diaz presents a Coastal Information System for a regional Spanish government, built using the open source gvSIG SDI client.

Usage of LiDAR within Asia
LiDAR sensors and the data produced from such systems are finally coming of the age in Asia after being widely used and accepted

Relevance of LiDAR to Asia's Economic Growth
The paper ponders over the issues involved in adoption of LiDAR technology and the ways in which it can make contributions in the Asian region.

LiDAR in Lahar Mapping
One component of installing a dedicated lahar-monitoring system was the need to produce a highly accurate 3-D map of the predicted lahar map

Processing of Airborne Laser Data and Images
The paper details the workflow or steps involved in processing airborne laser data (LiDAR) and airborne images.

Yellowstone and Heise: Supervolcanoes That Lighten Up
New studies of the volcanic rocks from previous eruptions of the Yellowstone supervolcano and its predecessors give researchers insight into possible future eruptions at America’s first national park.

Danger Lurks Deep: The Human Impact of Volcanoes
Massive volcanic eruptions may be rare, but they can be deadly, as millions of people live in the shadow of a volcano. A new analysis examines which parts of eruptions are the most hazardous to humans

The Surveying Inspired Art of Perri Lynch
Land surveying is described as an art, and not just in reference to execution of skills and knowledge required. Surveying describes and projects both linear and abstract thoughts over the broadest of media to apply that...

Point to Point: Valuable Papers Insurance
Conscientious surveyors maintain several types of insurance coverage for practice, spreading risk of calamity among the rest of the insurance pool. One kind deserves some scrutiny, because many of us are unaware of the coverage particulars...

Geo-Info CONOPS -- Developing the Disaster Response of the Future
The information interchanges necessary to achieve and sustain commom operating pictur (COP) and situation awareness (SA) in a disaster requires information flows to be designed in advance in the form of Geo-Enabled Information CONOPS (Geo-Info CONOPS).

Web-Based Tools Create Real-Time Situational Awareness
Responding to the need for an application capable of creating maps—common operating pictures—with real- or near-real-time data, the Center for GIS (CGIS) at Towson University in Maryland developed the Emergency Management Mapping Application (EMMA)....
