Laser Scanning and Archaeology
Terrestrial 3D laser scanning will become the future standard tool for high-resolution 3D documentation of archaeological excavations, but its capabilities are still underestimated. The new tool forces archaeologists to consider extension of archaeological stratigraphy theory. The author shows examples of the beneficial use of laser scanning and proposes an extended theory.

Cosmic Science and Dam Monitoring
The authors first treat the collimation technique applied to monitor world's largest millimetre-wavelength telescope in Nobeyama, Japan that resulted in discovery of the first black hole. They next consider automatic deformation monitoring system at thirteen of South Korea's multipurpose dams.

South American Ecosystems Atlas
The Ecosystems Atlas of South America and Antarctica is an educational programme for primary-school pupils. Software is distributed free to South American institutions that develop educational activities relating to the environment.

True Data Mining -- Topographic Mapping with Stereo Satellite Imagery
Due to an increased demand for metals, supported by strong market prices, mineral exploration is again moving into remote areas of the world. These areas generally are poorly mapped, and the maps are outdated or difficult to acquire.

GML Is Rocking in the Real World
The traditional Web treats content as anything that isn’t presentation, and only in the "Semantic Web" are there serious attempts to model content.

Normally Things Aren’t Normal
There’s a major assumption every time an average is mapped: that the data are normally distributed. That means its histogram approximates the bell-curve shape that was dreaded during high school grading.

An Unfinished Revolution -- Gaining Perspective on the Future of GIS
After almost 40 years, GIS has reached an interesting stage. There are an ever-increasing number of users who translate into larger revenues for software vendors. But, as a decision-making tool, it remains the domain of a relatively small number of technically savvy users.

Vesseltrax Shore-Side Martime Applications
The author describes an automatic vessel identification system that reports vessel positions using Google Maps.

Model Builder Extends GIS Capabilities
The author explores ESRI’s ModelBuilder functions for extending GIS capabilities in marine surveying data management.

Remote Sensing Aids Fire Damage Assessment
The author describes how digital imager technology is used for effective response to timber plantation fires in South Africa.

The Arctic Ocean: So Much We Still Don't Know
An expedition to core the Arctic Ocean has uncovered fascinating facets of the Arctic's past over the last 65 million years. What the new research is primarily revealing is how much we have yet to learn.

Democracy, GDP and Natural Disasters
A groundbreaking new analysis of the effects of natural disasters around the world is revealing that the greater the democracy and national income, the lesser the impact of natural disasters on a country.

survey.edu
The paper is aimed at bringing out the challenges/issues of the current education programmes in surveying across different countries like India,Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Australia and USA.

SatRef - Hong Kong Satellite Positioning Reference Station Network
The paper traces the transition from the traditional geodetic survey to the establishment of a continuous satellite positioning station network.

Laser Scanners in terrestrial surveying
The write-up briefs upon laser scanning, types of scanners and their working. Laser scanners available for terrestrial surveying, products from two companies, viz., Leica and Trimble have also been listed.

GIS? Show Me the Money!
There is a lot of talk about the role that GIS plays in business, and in society at large. The author talks about what GIS means to surveyors: experience with GIS technology, and the way it has performed, that proves it to be an excellent tool for any surveyor.

RTN101: NTRIP - The Essential RTN Interface (Part 10)
An RTN (Real Time Network) is by nature sophisticated in its underlying science, but surprisingly simple in day to day use. A shining example of this is the simplicity of the interface utilized by most to access RTN services: Network Transport of RTCM via Internet Protocol, or NTRIP. NTRIP is the refreshingly simple solution to the complex...
