 EDITORIAL

Location is everything... and Google Earth is going to new lengths in justifying this adage. The mapping of almost all major towns and cities in India by Google Earth, and data layer with streets and names, also available in Google Maps is a lifesaver to the millions who otherwise had to make-do with old antiquated paper maps – most of them obsolete or in many cases just not available due to map restriction. The best part is that the data has been generated by locals using GPS kits send by Google Earth. It is not just in India, but also in the rain forests of Congo that Google Earth is effecting lives. The Mebendjele Pygmies from the north western part of The Republic of Congo use Google Earth to record areas which should not be logged for wood by contractors. The efficacy of the 3D terrain visualisation has passed the acid test with even people without any background or prior exposure to a CRT display have easily understood the bird's eye views spectacularly displayed in Google Earth. The native Pygmies with their intimate knowledge of the terrain adapted to the 3D visuals very easily says Michael Hopkin from Nature magazine. This should be reason enough for Google to quickly update the low resolution coverage over almost all of DRC to the actually useful high resolution data.

The development of security and surveillance systems on a GIS platform has seen a sea change from just live feeds from security cameras linked with a spot on a map to technology intensive intelligent applications like the 'ShotSpotter'. With the 'perceived' ever increasing threat to property and personnel, there is a rising demand for such solutions. If last week's listing of headlines on our portal is to be taken as a yard stick, well more than twenty percent of the news was linked to security and defence. The 'TerrorRisk' discussed last week, and similar offerings may use demographic, ethnic, racial and social data to fine tune their 'Strategic Intelligence' – the objectivity of the data collection and analysis in such missions may be questioned.

The Map Asia 2007 conference starts on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur. Do join us to hear and share...
