8TH AUGUST 2005 VOL.1 WEEKLY 2

Last week various places in Asia witnessed incessant rainfall resulting in severe floods. The entire world was stunned when the Indian city Mumbai was struck by colossal damages caused by tremendous floods lashing out at the city after a day of unnaturally high rainfall. In such occasions the greatest challenge lies in picking up the broken pieces to regain normalcy and it is exactly this aspect where geospatial technologies come in handy. Geospatial technologies play a vital role in the stages of detection, monitoring and damage assessment, thereby adding value to our lives.

Lets look at China which is also facing serious floods in its north east and south of the country. However the ESA’s Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar has been monitoring the floods in near real time. This sensor can acquire imagery in both day and night and in all weathers and these images are helping authorities to identify floodwater extent and coordinate mitigation efforts. So in this fashion we can expect the increase of such contribution from the geospatial world, which will in turn help natural disaster management on the global level become more proactive and not merely reactive!    Editor

Scientists tracking fast-moving glaciers with GPS and satellite imagery

Two University of Maine scientists studying the effects of climate change in the Arctic have discovered that two glaciers in Greenland are moving at a not-so-glacial pace. They took the help of GPS and satellite imageries in their study. To take measurements, the scientists drilled holes in the ice and placed GPS devices in them to precisely measure the forward motion of the glaciers by satellite.

GIS education for a changed world

GIS is a growing field and there is much interest to learn and know more about this technology. This paper by David Rhind highlights that GIS is potentially much more than a technology. Education in and for GIS now needs to be much wider than has hitherto been normal, if we are to gain the full potential available. Good technology – and the skills to use it – form a necessary condition for success but not a sufficient condition
