PSLV-C9 carrying CARTOSAT-2A blasts off from Sriharikota
India's PSLV-C9 blasted off into space, carrying ten satellites including the country's latest remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-2A, from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Monday April 28th. ( Watch Video)

Scientists cheered as the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its thirteenth flight, soared into the clear sky in a perfect lift off at 9.23 am from the second launch pad. Besides the 690 kg CARTOSAT-2A, the PSLV is also carrying ISRO's Indian Mini Satellite-1 (IMS-1), weighing 83kg, and eight nano satellites built by universities and research institutes in Canada and Germany.

While the CARTOSAT-2A, carrying state-of-the-art panchromatic camera (PAN), will be used for mapping purposes and management of natural resources, the IMS-1 will be used as a platform for trying out advanced technology in future launches.

By the end of December of 2008, both incoming Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data and all Landsat 5 TM data acquired by the USGS since launch (1984) will become available, with all Landsat 4 TM (1982-1985) and Landsat 1-5 Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) (1972-1994) data becoming available by the end of January 2009. All Landsat data purchasing options from the USGS will be discontinued by February 2009, once the entire Landsat archive can be accessed at no charge.

Using satellite imagery to measure plant biomass, a team of crop scientists has demonstrated an ability to forecast yields of various crops much sooner than traditional methods, and with considerable accuracy, announced Planalytics, Inc. as they introduced their new GreenReport E-newsletter. The first winter wheat forecast for 2008 was produced on March 21st. By using satellite imagery instead of traditional sampling techniques, crop yield forecasts can be generated up to two months before USDA estimates, and because they are based on images that are constantly being downloaded from the satellite, these forecasts can be updated every two weeks throughout the growing season. Compared to initial USDA forecasts or normalized trends, the TMAI/KARS forecast models have been shown to be consistently more accurate in recent years.

Imagery for everyone...
The Global Land Cover Facility (earlier GeoData Cover) offered by the USGS is the first free -global-dataset of multiband satellite imagery for download. Then available at a resolution of 30m, it was the first image data that Google Earth used for the global true colour imagery cover. Since 2005, Google Earth has also made available for free (albeit , just for viewing and printing) large areas on our planet at very high resolution. The recent announcement from USGS “All Landsat data purchasing options from the USGS will be discontinued by February 2009, once the entire Landsat archive can be accessed at no charge.” is a rather generous move which will benefit the global users of satellite data. Two other countries also have such independent archives from their own satellites – India and France. NRSA has IRS data from 1989 – should the global user community expect a similar altruistic move? Else what purpose will storing / amassing / hoarding 'DNs' serve.
