EDITORIAL
Last December the Observer of London send out ripples by hinting about the 'Google
Phone'. Google was supposedly in talks
with telecom giant Orange, it said. This week, LG and Google announced a global
collaboration towards offering pre-installed
Google services on LG mobile phones. The mobile phone will have Google Maps,
Gmail and a host of other goodies. These
mobiles are set to hit the market by late this year and then I'll reluctantly
have to palm-off my GPS-PDA which I just paid a
packet for...The prospect of free cell phones is very much real today, what with
contextual and locational ad content being
beamed to you on your mobile? Remember, Eric Schmidt of Google said - “Your mobile
phone should be free. It just makes sense
that subsidies should increase”. Well, is the Google Phone being offered free?
The CTIA Wireless 2007 conference concluded in Orlando, Florida this week. Here,
the Carbon Project introduced its first p2p
software for Geosocial Networking based on the IPv6 protocol. The free beta
version of the ((Echo))MyPlace software powered
by CarbonCloud the first p2p framework designed to allow people to share and
discuss their experiences about places using
maps, photographs and text. The advantage (?) is that everything is hosted and
shared from your machine, so you are in
complete control of who gets to see what.
I had earlier discussed the seemingly excessive surveillance camera coverage
of London city. Well, the London City Fathers
feel it's not enough. London is planning to launch a satellite in collaboration
with Inmarsat with the capability of tracking
every vehicle on its streets. Speed Freaks will have one more obstacle in their
path, but only after 2011 (the year when this
satellite is scheduled to be operational).
