EDITORIAL

After the buzz raised by the .kml search capability, Google's 'My Maps' offering appears to be a rather late entry on the stage. The ability to add objects to maps has been made available by other virtual globes quite some time ago. Some have called it a tool for creating 'mashups', though as of now it well qualifies as a patch. It is very much possible that the developers at Mountain View are keeping the best goodies for later - 31st May: The Google Developer Day, when all Google Geeks can learn from the gurus and share their learning too.

Having pioneered contextual search (almost), it would be interesting to probe the developments at Google on the 'Content Based Image Retrieval' (CBIR) or object search. The .kml search is just a metadata search which checks the name of the file, in a way it is an 'Informal' metadata search. An embedded metadata (in images) search would be of great help if Google Earth in the years to come, can incorporate object information within the data. Placing such heavy demands on Google Earth is rather embarrassing since most 'free users' just use the basic 'search and see' capability. A rather good effort in changing this 'geospatial illiteracy' has been done by David Crowder in 'Google Earth for Dummies', so spread the word around or better still gift a copy to a ......

In this era of collective - cooperative work, the EU with its 27 members is about to unveil a new space policy. According to a EU source, economic pressure is forcing member states to move toward a common military satellite environment since the budgetary capabilities of member states cannot continue supporting separate national programs . The 'Multinational Space-based Imaging System (MUSIS) will now probably have a larger support than the 6 EU nations which it earlier had. On home turf, we at GIS Development have consolidated our four regional print publications (Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Malaysia and Africa) and will henceforth publish a single global publication.
