The string of pearls grows longer. The latest one in the PitneyBowles necklace was MapInfo! Pitney Bowes (PB) a hardcore mailstream engineering (yes, i mean mailstream) company has just completed the acquisition of MapInfo Corporation. A bit of digging into the PB website to understand their objectives behind this move brought out the following – In 2004 PB acquired Group 1 Software, in 2005 they acquired Imagitas and last year they acquired Emtex Ltd., Ibis Consulting Inc., Advertising Audit Service Inc. (AAS), and PMH Caramanning. Group 1 Software specialises in customer communication management with a strong footing in business geographics, while Imagitas was and continues to be a direct marketing services company specialising in creating marketing channels between the consumers and the Government. Emtex specialises in large-volume mailing and complex multi-vendor multi-site print operations while Ibis Consulting is a leading provider of litigation support services. AAS specialised in digital asset management and ad customisation while PMH Caramanning offers loyalty incentive and certification solutions. With MapInfo in the nest, PB probably is attempting to use their location intelligence domain knowledge to develop holistic solutions in the arena that they know best i.e. customised, mailstream solutions. The transfusion of over a thousand consultants from MapInfo with core competence in location intelligence into PB, is the icing on the cake. Please practice saying PB MapInfo now...

'Policy' drives investment. The announcement by the NSDI of India recently and the assurances by the decision makers and takers during Map World Forum is having an effect. A shot in the arm for MapMyIndia in the form of an 'undisclosed' amount for creating the 'highest quality GIS Information' from venture capitalists is a harbinger of hope for the Indian geospatial services industry. With street level maps for most Indian cities now freely available on the net (courtesy – Google Earth), the hunger and demand for still better maps for navigation and other services is sure to set the ball rolling for the industry.
