24th April 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 17

It is not Shangri la, it’s real. Map service providers are actually slugging it out to the benefit of the customer that’s you and me. Once in the haloed portals of high tech services, these are today on the common mans desktop. We have now a world which has spatial data ‘Malls’, some real some virtual…so push your carts and go shopping, even window shopping is fun. May all the shopkeepers profit and survive so that you and me finally have a choice – a monopoly in this realm could be as catastrophic as the present situation of ‘GPS’.

These very kind of technologies which were till recently frowned upon by bureaucrats is now adding almost twice the earlier revenue to the government treasury, by putting in place an almost fool proof land tax collection system in India. Presently a successful pilot project, it better be implemented throughout the country- the worlds largest democracy.
