7th August 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 32

Recently ESRI released the ‘A to Z’ dictionary of GIS – impeccable timing… what with the Merriam – Webster, Oxford and all other standard dictionaries both in print and online not explaining the meaning of ‘Geospatial’. A word that today directly or indirectly controls how things function in the ‘civilised’ world. Be it agriculture or the ATM, geospatial technologies have permeated them all. The ESRI lexicon will surely plug this gaping void in availability of a standard reference in all words geospatial and related. Kudos! In a lighter vein - the closest word that Merriam- Webster online dictionary suggests for Geospatial is – jesuitical…

The old and antique maps of the world, are basis on which modern day cartography and hence geospatial sciences are based. The reference to Ptolemy cannot be missed. The maps produced by Martin Waldseemüller in the 15th century A.D, use Plotemy’s observations. They also use travelogues and maps of Americo Vespuccio. It is today very much debatable whether Americo did chart the lands he thought he had visited or was he just being equivocal or jesuitical.
