EDITORIAL
The future is bright and future is here – ‘…public sector spending on GIS/Geospatial software will surpass the regulated sector for the first time in 2006’ says a market research and assessment report from Daratech. Read in isolation, news tit-bits such as - ‘ street level maps available for 150 Indian cities’, - ‘High-resolution 3D map of Europe to be ready by 2007’, - ‘..comprehensive AVL and MDRV solution to be made available..’, do not offer a realistic picture of the extent of business being generated almost daily in the geospatial domain, but on a global scale it directly lends credence to forecasts that ‘the public sector will grow 11% in 2006 as compared to a 4% growth in the regulated sector’.
On the technology front, the Synthetic Aperture Laser Radar, baptised ‘Synthetic Aperture Ladar for Tactical Imaging’ (SALTI) by the DARPA and built by Northrop Grumman has been field tested and certified. This SAR offers the long-range, day/night operational ability afforded by conventional SAR with the ease-of-interpretability of high-resolution optical imaging. The cherry is, the exploitability of three-dimensional imagery. Primarily developed for the killing fields, the SALTI will, like most earlier defence technologies, be applied for civilian applications very soon – market forces will demand it.
