 EDITORIAL

The great maelstrom it is not... These images, the one on the left from TerraSAR (courtesy DLR) while the rather colourful one is from Google Earth depict an exotic structure in Mauritania which has for decades served as a placemark for orbiting astronauts and is a 500my old centrally uplifted structure with very low relief. The circular ridges are hardly a few meters high and hence in the VIS and NIR data apart from spectacular colours, do not give any idea about the structure while the TerraSAR image shown here brings out the attitude of the radially dipping limestones, dolomites and breccias. The TerraSAR image is in ScanSAR mode and it would be a geologist's delight to get a glimpse of the Spotlight data or even the StripMap mode data... The subtle variation in relief brought out in the radar data will aid geo-exploration and solve some of the complex issues in structural geology. We look forward to high resolution DEMs generated from the TerraSAR and made available in the ever popular virtual globes .

It has been estimated that India alone will need about 5000 geospatialists in the coming year. The training arena was till now populated by university courses and a few private training institutes. The NIIT-ESRI combine has been into it for more than a decade. With the entry of Rolta into this 'Education business' the market dynamics will drastically change – what with an output of over 1000 trained 'geospatialists' every year. I can safely say that Horwood's 10th law of Data Processing and Information Systems will not hold...
