EDITORIAL

It’s a rather rare happening, when 500,000 copies of a software are bought by an agency – in this case the US Census Bureau. It’s the globally popular mobile mapping software ‘ArcPad’ developed by Maptel of Australia and marketed by ESRI. What is surprising is that a web search for ‘ArcPad’ on Google did not list the developer’s web site till the first 180 searches. Curiouser and Curiouser…

The US Census Bureau is scheduled to hold the next nation wide census in 2010 and the half a million ‘ArcPad’ copies are part of the automated field data collection programme. This also suggests a large order for PDAs, in the near future for putting the software to good use.

It was recently reported in a market survey that public sector spending on GIS/Geospatial software would surpass the regulated (government!) sector. The recent orders from the US Census Bureau may just tilt the scales the other way.

Mobile GIS is to become a part of our daily lives with ‘mobile social networking tools’ as Jay Benson of TeleAtlas calls them, being developed. A parking space availability module developed for the mobile GIS by SpotScout is one of the tools. How about a map of all the nearby watering holes!!! All for social networking, something that all of us can look forward to during Map World Forum 2007. Lets meet up.
