The first Chinese lunar satellite, Chang'e 1, has sent the first photographs of the lunar surface, an objective that is considered to be the “third milestone” in the country’s space program, after the first satellite launch in 1970 and the first Chinese manned space flight in 2003. Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, said that the mission is a success, as it shows China’s "will, the ambition and the capability to compose more shining new chapters while ascending the science and technology summit."

DigitalGlobe announced that WorldView-1 has completed its commissioning, meets all of its requirements, and is delivering imagery to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as part of the NextView program. Full Operating Capability (FOC) with NGA began on November 17, 2007. Following a controlled roll-out with NGA, DigitalGlobe will begin taking orders for WorldView-1 imagery from its global resellers, partners and customers on January 3, 2008.

Millions of fishermen in Chile and other coastal countries face cloudy futures due to the “red tides" - scary code words for harmful algae the sea tides bring that can poison shellfish and other seafood with brevetoxin, taking it off the market until deemed to be safe. Chile is implementing an early alert system to detect Red Tide that should be operational beginning January 2008 was announced recently by the country’s National Fisheries Service. The research and development behind the system was carried out by the Laboratory of Marine Toxins from the University of Chile. Data will be made accessible through the internet using a combination of technologies that include GIS and interactive maps of various mussel farm sites. In the future, the system may also incorporate emailing and cellular text messaging capabilities.

Selene's Endymion -
The race is heating up between China and Japan. Last week the first images from Chang'e 1 were beamed down. The ultraviolet images are the first of its kind claim the Chinese. In the mean time, JAXA has declared that on 3rd November, they have successfully demonstrated production of stereo movies (3 dimensional movies) of the Moon surface by using stereoscopic images obtained with the Terrain Camera (TC) on-board KAGUYA. This verification was performed as part of the initial check out of mission instruments on-board the Kaguya from a lunar orbit at an altitude of about 100 km. These are the first 3-D movies of the Moon including its polar areas with an aerial resolution of 10 meters.

These 3d views from the Moon remind me of the recent arguments on 2d vs. 3d in context with Google Maps and Google Earth. The possibility of Google Earth fading away and being taken over by Google Maps may be a company driven agenda, but the impact of a virtual globe on the visual cortex is unparalleled, and we will soon have Virtual Moon. A look at the 3d data from the Moon and I was reminded of the 'Moon flyby' in the film Armageddon.

India's 'Chandrayan' mission is scheduled for next year and will add to the deluge of lunar pictures. Till then, JAXA's TC seems to be a star performer and first contender to be Selene's Endymion.
