Want to see the storms coming your way? Visit the Hurricane Data Portal launched by NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Centre at http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.g ov/hurricane/overview.shtml. This site, still in its infancy, is designed for viewing and studying hurricanes by utilizing various measurements by the NASA remote-sensing instruments. The portal consists of four main components:
i. Current Conditions (in pre-selected regions and updated daily) containing the latest maps and profiles from NASA satellites, such as, TRMM, AIRS, etc.
ii. Event based: the latest maps and profiles for an active tropical storm or hurricane.
iii. Science focus: Examples/stories describing the data usage in hurricane monitoring and research
iv. Archives: maps and profiles from past tropical storms and hurricanes.
Worth a dekko, especially the animations of Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma – the femmes fatales of 2005. If you are a Google Earth worshipper then the Katrina TRMM KMZ is a compulsory download.

Government, though having the power to withhold information from its citizens, should consider it a part of its duty to disseminate it. The repeated statements from these powers against the ‘Movement called Google Earth’ draws unnecessary attention. Attempts to mask ‘important and sensitive’ installations will only draw focus on such spots. If an ardent plea will help, here is one - Let us all enjoy immersing ourselves in virtual globes – the real world is slowly being destroyed any ways. Greater awareness and understanding through visual treats like Google Earth, Virtual Earth and World Wind sensitizes the human race towards the only home it has and offers us a chance to change. Such a revolution should be supported.
