EDITORIAL
The GRACE mission was launched in early 2002 for measuring gravity variations around the globe. The analysis of data collected by the twin satellites indicates the depletion of fresh water reserves in some of the large watersheds of the world. This is a cause for concern. The naturally inequitable distribution of fresh water along with increasing population and unsustainable consumption habits is the reason. I often feel the burden of such information and wonder how best to disseminate it. It is a situation, all involved in observing, studying and understanding Gaia have faced. All is not bad on the green front – Indian forests have increased by about 6% over a four year period and the upward trend continues as has been calculated from satellite pictures.
We owe all that we are to some ‘teacher’. The books written by teachers become an integral part of our work and thought. Most of us would have referred to the texts on digital image processing and remote sensing by Professor John R. Jensen. He was declared the recipient of this year’s William T. Pecora award in recognition of his outstanding and sustained international leadership in advancing geographical remote sensing and remote sensing education. This award is sponsored jointly by the US Dept. of Interior and NASA. We at GIS Development extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Jensen.
